Common Core State Standards
The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) are expectations designed to ensure all students achieve college and career readiness. These standards are a result of a state-led effort coordinated by the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices (NGA Center) and the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO). The standards were developed in collaboration with teachers, school administrators, and experts, to provide a clear and consistent framework to prepare our children for college and the workforce.

ELA/Literacy
- Building knowledgethrough content-rich nonfiction
- Reading, writing and speaking grounded in evidence from text, both literary and informational
- Regular practice with complex text and its academic language
Mathematics
- Focus strongly where the Standards focus
- Coherence: Think across grades, and link to major topics within grades
- Rigor: In major topics pursue conceptual understanding, procedural skill and fluency, and application with equal intensity

Schools in California will teach to these updated standards beginning in the 2014-15 school year. The goal of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) is to ensure that all students graduating from our public school system will have the skills and knowledge necessary to assume their positions in the 21st century global economy. The new standards are designed to be relevant in the real world, reflecting the knowledge and skills students need for success in both higher education and career. These standards were developed with the intention of unifying curricula and standards across all 50 states. Forty-six states have now adopted these shared standards so their students can compete and succeed on a world stage. The CCSS have been developed for English/Language Arts (ELA) and for Mathematics. Plans are underway to develop standards in History/Social Science and Science, as well.
