Raising a reader

Children receive a Red Book Bag each week filled with high quality, award-winning, multicultural and bilingual books to take home and share with the caring adults in their life.

Children are inspired to engage in developing strong shared reading routines.

Raising A Reader currently serves 3,000 children aged 0-6  in Santa Cruz County and Pajaro Valley each year. Sites include child care centers, preschools and family day care homes, as well as transitional kindergarten and kindergarten classrooms.

“We love the book bag program. It gives us an opportunity to sit down together as a family and read great books together.”- Parent

Four (4) main program aims are central to Raising A Reader’s mission:
  • Foster healthy brain development.
  • Develop and enhance early literacy and language skills.
  • Promote and strengthen family engagement.
  • Develop, promote, and foster intrinsic reading motivation.
