Standards-Based v. Traditional

The 2019-2020 REPORT CARD templates were developed by teachers to better capture a student's achievement toward end-of-year grade-level standards and expectations.

What is the purpose of the Report Card?

The purpose of the PVUSD report card is to communicate to students, parents, legal guardians, and district staff a student's progress toward achieving content standards.  The report card will identify areas of strength, and areas where additional time and effort are needed to meet those standards.

What is the difference between a "traditional report card" and a "standards-based report card"?

The chart below outlines the major differences.

Traditional

Report Card

Standards-Based Report Card
Reporting based on subject area.

Reporting based on grade-level targets that indicate what students should understand and be able to do by the end of each grade, as defined by standards (the CA-CCSS for English Language Arts & Literacy and Mathematics).

Grades are given for each subject area, such as reading, writing, math, etc.

Subject areas are sub-divided into a list of concepts/skills that students need to master by end-of-year. Each item listed receives a "mark' indicating progress toward mastery.

Work habits may be calculated in with the letter grade (missing assignments, late work, homework, effort, etc.).

Work habits are reported separately and are not calculated with marks given to indicate a student's proficiency in a standard(s).

Often measures how well students do in comparison to classmates, typically applied when using traditional percentage-based grading.

Report should measure how well an individual student is doing in relation to end-of-year grade-level standards/learning targets.  The purpose is to give parents (and the student) a clear understanding of their child's progress, along with identifying strengths and areas for growth in specific areas/concepts.
