Welcome to PVUSD

DR. michelle Rodriguez, Superintendent of Schools

Dr. RodriguezDra. Michelle Rodriguez
Superintendente de Escuelas

Dear PVUSD Students, Families and Staff,

Welcome to the 2020-2021 school year!  Every member of the PVUSD team has been working tirelessly over the last four months to fulfil our promise to provide high quality instruction through caring educators, staff and leaders representing every school site and departments. Alongside dedicated staff, community partners and families, we have mobilized efforts to bridge the gap between our vision for the future and our implementation of distance learning in the spring. Our commitment remains to our expanded definition of student success that includes focus on the whole child and preparing all students for college, career and life.

We have seen many examples of hope and excellence as we have moved together through this challenging time. Here are just a few of those examples:

  • Our Food and Nutrition Services distributed over 1.5 Million meals over the last four months
  • Our Technology Department provided over 15,000 Chromebooks and 1,250 hotspots to students and staff, and answered over 3,500 parent calls through our hot line number in English, Spanish and Mixteco Bajo
  • Our Extended Learning Department provided over 4,000 STEM and Arts Kits to students in grades K-8 during the summer
  • Sites distributed weekly packets to ensure continued learning for TK-2 grade students throughout the spring
  • Educational Services and teachers invited over 600 students in grades 1-3 to a Virtual Summer Foundational Literacy Project to reduce unfinished learning
  • Administration established the PVUSD Virtual Academy to meet the needs of students through another School of Choice
  • Leadership implemented new ways to connect and support two-way communication with community and staff through Conversations with the Superintendent, Ask Dr. Rodriguez’s weekly FAQs, COVID-19 website page, email, text message outreach to all parents and social media
  • PVUSD, PVFT and CSEA finalized the Reopening PVUSD Contingency Plan so that we are all prepared to pivot as needed with the pandemic risk level

Our focus on educational equity and support for each and every student has only strengthened. Each PVUSD student will have the necessary resources to ensure their success in distance learning including a Chromebook, internet access through a hotspot when internet is not available at home and a Beginning of School Launch Kit.  The Launch Kits include over 20 different supplies needed during both whole and small group instruction as well as during independent learning. The Launch Kits provide grade level appropriate materials such as journals/composition notebooks, colored pencils, glue, and scissors.  Students will use these resources as they work alongside their teachers during online instruction as well as during independent learning time to reduce screen time. Each parent will be receiving a welcome packet when they pick up their Launch Kit with important information on Parent Learning Modules to support their child during distance learning.

This year’s theme is Learning Redesigned through Connection, Unity and Purpose. Fill Your Cup!  We pledge to connect with all stakeholders by actively listening and investing time in you, unite in recognition of the importance of our partnership and join with purpose to fulfill our mission and vision.
