The results are in! Starting in 2017 PVUSD increased focus on foundational reading skills instruction. This included intensive professional learning for teachers & administrators at 3 schools. This model then expanded to encompass 9 schools in 2018-2019. All 16 schools next year!

The City of Watsonville is looking to prepare a complete streets plan for the downtown area to enable safe access for all users, including pedestrians, bicyclists, transit riders, and motorists of all ages and abilities. The City and their partners have been collecting input from the community since 2018 and are continuing to collect input through an extensive outreach process.

At the most recent meeting of the PVUSD Board of Trustees, the following 2 resolutions were approved:
Resolution #18-19-46, in support of Proposition 58 and State Board of Education's English Learner's Roadmap reiterates the District's commitment to ensure English learners, pre-school to 12th grade, have access to high-quality instruction and programs.
Resolution #18-19-44 in support of Kindergarten grant program applications expresses the District's intent to procure funding for full day kinder through the Full Day Kindergarten Facilities Grant Program. The application will be for every elementary school in the District, including Alianza Charter School, Pacific Coast Charter School and Watsonville Charter School of the Arts .

PVUSD is getting ready for Pajaro Valley Education Foundation's (PVEF) first Annual Innovator of the Year award!
On Monday, June 3, at 6 PM, 1 certificated & 1 classified employee from each school & department will be honored as a site innovator of the year! We are thrilled to share the list of honorees with our entire community below.
In addition, from the group of site and department awardees, PVEF Board of Directors selected eight individuals, one certificated and one classified from the elementary school level, middle school level, high school level and department who will receive the District Innovator of the Year Award! Those recipients will be announced during the event - you don't want to miss it!
DOORS OPEN AT 5:15 PM - come early enjoy a bit of food and wonderful company!
PVUSD will hold the first annual end of the school year "mini" conference for parents, offering them ideas on how to keep their students engaged over the summer. Our goal is to provide educational and community resources, that can help prevent the "summer slide". We'll have several workshops focusing on math, science and art, followed by a resource fair. This event will be on Saturday, June 1st at Mintie White Elementary from 9:00 am- 12:00 pm.

PVUSD Board of Trustees is pleased to bring to you the following three resolutions approved at their May 8 meeting:
Resolution #18-19-41 declares May 19 - 25 as Classified School Employees Week. PVUSD is extremely fortunate to count on the dedication and commitment of our almost 1,000 classified staff.
Resolution #18-19-42 is a call for a moratorium on expansion of Charter schools and strengthening transparency and oversight in governance and practice. PVUSD cares about the quality of education for the students in this community and joins key organizations, such as NAACP, in this effort to limit expansion of charter schools.
Resolution #18-19-40 acknowledges May as National Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month. PVUSD's student diversity encapsulates many cultures and traditions and immigrants of Asian and Pacific ancestry have contributed significantly to the community's growth and stability.

This is a fun, FREE, student opportunity! Teen Kitchen Project is having a "Junior Iron Chef" cooking competition on Saturday May 18th at the Kaiser Permanente Arena in Santa Cruz. Some PVUSD students have already signed up and will be competing against students groups from local Santa Cruz County schools. Panel of judges include Congressman Jimmy Panetta and Mayor Francisco Estrada. The winning recipe will be on next year's menu for PVUSD and Santa Cruz City Schools .
They need more students to compete and we want PVUSD to be well represented!!

"Teams consist of 3-5 students in 6-8th grade or 9-12th grade.
Each team must have an adult coach who is a school representative or from a school related organization or parent/guardian of a team member. Coaches must be present during the entire competition.

This event is geared towards showing Engineering as a Helping Profession. Example are projects such as creating prosthetics, creating clean water systems for rural communities, and any projects that combine innovation and creativity. It is open to all middle school and high school students and their families. Proof of Attendance passes will be provided at the event. Some schools are able to honor these passes for extra credit, assignment waivers, and even Saturday School credits!

Our District is honored to share with our community the attached resolutions, approved by the Board of Trustees, that highlight our focus and dedication to ensuring a positive educational environment and experience for our students.
Resolution #18-19-29 - Recognizing April 2019 as National Bilingual/Multilingual Learner Advocacy Month. PVUSD is honored to join educational agencies throughout the Country in highlighting the importance of multilingualism as well as our District's commitment to strengthening the bilingual education program.
Resolution #18-19-31 - Declaring April as National Child Abuse Month: Reiterates the District's commitment to keep child safety front and center. This resolution calls on all District's systems of support to ensure students have access to resources they need to be safe, healthy and successful.
Resolution #18-19-26 - Support of Comprehensive Universal Single-Payer Healthcare Coverage Program and Healthcare Cost for All, HR 1384. The resolution confirms the District's dedication so students have access to health coverage.
Resolution #18-19-32 - Acknowledging Adult Education Week, April 8 - 12, 2019.

The Annual Raising A Reader refresher training, called the Literacy Network, took place on Saturday, March 16. There were 55 people, mostly family child care providers, along with some preschool teachers and aides who rotate the red book bags each week at their sites. Teacher Manuel Serrano presented interactive reading techniques as he shared the book Corduroy with the attendees. His enthusiasm, humor, and clear examples of open ended questions captivated the group. After wonderful examples of how to share a book interactively, the table groups practiced making comments with each other in guided practice. Later the participants networked with each other sharing best practices and answering each other's questions about getting parents involved, tracking materials, and library visits. The presentation was conducted in Spanish and Nancy Faulstich interpreted for the English speakers that attended.
Some providers and teachers arrived 45 minutes before the training started and stayed later in the parking lot to continue networking after it was finished. Here are some of the comments:
"Manuel nos dio muchas ideas de como leer el libro y como extender nuestras ideas para extender el conocimiento de los niños." (Manuel gave us many ideas about how to read a book and how to extend our ideas to expand children's understanding.)
"Voy a incorporar estas estrategias cuando estoy leyendo: usar las herramientas que recibí y ponerlas en practica." (I am going to incorporate these strategies when I am reading: use the tools that I received and put them into practice.)
"Lo voy a incorporar durante el circulo y con mis familias." (I am going to incorporate (these tools) during circle time and with my families.)
The providers and teachers were energized by Manuel's enthusiasm and inspired to use the interactive strategies provided in their folders.
Thank you to First 5 Santa Cruz and PVUSD for making this event possible. Coffee for the Literacy Network was donated by Second Street Café, snacks and fruit were donated by Grocery Outlet and Safeway.
La capacitación de actualización anual Raising A Reader, llamada Literacy Network, se llevó a cabo el sábado 16 de marzo. Había 55 personas, en su mayoría proveedores de cuidado infantil familiar, junto con algunos maestros preescolares y ayudantes que rotaban las bolsas rojas con libros cada semana en sus centros. PVUSD has made a decision for the safety of our students and bus drivers to suspend bus service on Valencia Road due to the road conditions.

Posted 3/20/19Last Thursday, March 7, 24 El Sistema students from Radcliff elementary school got a surprise: free new bikes thanks to the Odyssey Teams, an organization that was referred to El Sistema by United Way of Santa Cruz County.
Odyssey Teams is a philanthropy team-building company. For the program, participants from businesses build bicycles as a business simulation. They were utterly surprised when the El Sistema students entered the ballroom to receive the bikes they just assembled! The participants did not know that the students were going to be there and the students did not know either. It was a surprise for them as well.

This is a wonderful example of how networking, telling our students stories inspires organizations to become involved.
El jueves pasado, 7 de marzo, 24 estudiantes de El Sistema de la escuela primaria Radcliff recibieron una sorpresa: bicicletas nuevas gratis gracias a Odyssey Teams, una organización que fue remitida a El Sistema por United Way del Condado de Santa Cruz.

The Mary Ann Gomez Scholarship is an annual award from PVUSD Personnel Commissioners.
Who Qualifies
Children of Classified Employees, Classified Confidential Employees or * Classified Management Employees
* Graduating High School Senior with 2.5 GPA or higher
* Student enrolled in an accredited institution of higher learning / or Technical School (Proof of enrollment must be submitted to Human Resources to receive the award).
This award will provide up to $1000.00 directly to the student for the purposes of supplementing tuition or living expenses and will not be disbursed directly to a designated technical school, college or university.
The purpose of this scholarship is to defray some of the cost in order to put advanced education more within the grasp of the hard working parents of our classified staff members in the Pajaro Valley Unified School District.
Important Dates
Deadline for submission of the essay will be no later than 4:30 pm, Friday, March 29th, 2019.
The selection of the award will be completed at the April Personnel Commission meeting.

During Family Arts Nights, SPECTRA artists bring the arts alive through a variety of workshops from story-telling and folk dancing to African Drumming. Families engage in the arts with their children – often three generations gather to create together – where they experience first-hand the importance of the arts in their children’s education.
We invite you experience the joy of the arts for yourself. You can stay for one or two of the 20 minute rotations, or stay to enjoy the full evening.

Community Foundation SCZ Awards Grant to Support Raising A Reader!

The Raising A Reader program encourages families who may not have books in their homes to experience the joy of reading with their children.

The Personnel Commission of the PVUSD is proud to announce the 4th annual Mary Ann Gomez Scholarship. The Personnel Commissioners established a scholarship fund, in Mary Ann’s honor, for the purpose of awarding a scholarship to a graduating senior who plans to attend an institution of higher learning after high school. For the past three years, the Personnel Commission has awarded 12 scholarships of $500 to each recipient. The children of our classified employees (bargaining unit, management and confidential) are eligible to apply.

This report and resolution will cover the fees collected and spent for the 2017-2018 fiscal year and explain the anticipated use of the fund balance in the Capital Facilities Account.

On Wednesday, the Board of Trustees of Pajaro Valley Unified School District approved three courses that support the District’s commitment to creating Career Technical Education (CTE) pathways that result in certifications, internships and dual enrollment opportunities, and enrich students’ experience: Auto Body Repair, IT Essentials Plus, and Computer Science Principles. On Thursday, November 8, PVUSD held a Bond Citizens Oversight Committee Meeting and presented a video of the 2018 projects that have taken place. The presentation included an account of 38 projects at 22 sites, totaling $19,123,353 in expenditures, with about $14 million being from Measure L funds. Thousands Join Call for 'Afterschool for All'
[Watsonville, CA] – On Thursday, October 25th, the National Afterschool Alliance will celebrate the 19th Annual Lights On Afterschool Event. From the Afterschool Alliance website, “Launched in October 2000, Lights On Afterschool is the only nationwide event celebrating afterschool programs and their important role in the lives of children, families and communities. The effort has become a hallmark of the afterschool movement and generates media coverage across the country each year. The Afterschool Alliance organizes Lights On Afterschool to draw attention to the many ways afterschool programs support students by offering them opportunities to learn new things—such as science, community service, robotics, Tae Kwon Do and poetry—and discover new skills. The events send a powerful message that millions more kids need quality afterschool programs.”
Hundreds of students attending afterschool programs in PVUSD will celebrate Lights On Afterschool all week long, which is meant to bring attention to the critical importance of afterschool programs. Local celebrations will take will vary among school sites and included carnivals and smoothie bike parties.
Recent data from the America After 3PM report, commissioned by the Afterschool Alliance, shows a vast unmet demand for afterschool programs nationwide. In 2014, over 1.6 million students in California, participate in an afterschool program, yet another 2.5 million would be enrolled if a program were available. Further, 90 percent of California's parents report they are satisfied with their child's afterschool program, and 80 percent agree that afterschool programs give working parents peace of mind. More work needs to be done to meet the great need for afterschool programs that keep PVUSD students safe, inspire them to learn, and help working families.
Michelle Rodriguez, Ed.D, Superintendent of Pajaro Valley Unified School District, states: "In PVUSD, we are so proud to have such a high quality, established Extended Learning program that provides academic acceleration and support and enrichment to over 3,000 students after school each day. On October 25th, we get the opportunity to recognize and celebrate their efforts during the Lights On Afterschool event. The event nationally recognizes their goal of being a stemless extension of the school day in a safe and enriching environment. "
"We are all very proud of our afterschool students," said Carol Ortiz, Extended Learning Director. "There's no reason that learning should stop at 3 p.m., particularly if the alternative is unsupervised screen time, or any of the dangerous or unhealthy behaviors that can ensnare children in the afternoons. Like so many other afterschool programs around the nation, ours is supported by funding from the Federal 21st Century Community Learning Centers (21CCLC) initiative as well as After School Education and Safety (ASES), California's Prop. 49. Since its creation, it has provided funding to allow millions of children to attend afterschool. We need to grow this funding stream for afterschool and summer learning programs."
PVUSD's first after school program opened in 1999 with the 21st Century grant from the U.S. Department of Education. Originally serving 1,100 students, the program has grown to now serve over 3,000 students, providing homework assistance, mentoring, tutoring, and classes and clubs in sports, recreation, mathematics, science and dozens of other subjects.
Lights On Afterschool is organized by the Afterschool Alliance, a nonprofit public awareness and advocacy organization working to ensure that all children have access to quality afterschool programs.
