As the Aptos community continued to grow, the need for an elementary school became very evident. In 1961, Rio del Mar opened with six classrooms. The school office was located in a school bus which was in the school parking lot. The school continued to expand in 1964 with the addition of six more classrooms, the kindergarten complex, library and multi-purpose room. Four additional classrooms where built in 1968. The name Rio del Mar means mouth of the river. The school is located close where the river runs into the Pacific Ocean. Today, Rio del Mar Elementary School serves students in grades kindergarten through sixth grade.
