Campus Safety Coordinators

WATSONVILLE — Fifteen Campus Safety Coordinators (CSCs) from Pajaro Valley Unified School District (PVUSD) completed a three-day training session this week aimed at helping them work more effectively with law enforcement and emergency personnel, handle volatile situations at school better, and enforce school rules fairly and consistently with the least disruption to learning.
“Campus safety coordinators play an important role in creating a safe and positive educational environment,” said Linda Perez, director of the Safe Schools/Healthy Students Project, which is sponsoring the training. “We wanted our campus safety coordinators to not only learn how to recognize and intervene into potentially dangerous situations, but also how to help prevent them.”
Jerry Figuerres, Environmental, Health, and Safety Manager for PVUSD, worked with D-Prep, LLC, a training service for disaster preparation and critical incident response to plan and coordinate the training. “I wanted our staff to have professional training from experts to help them do their jobs more effectively,” said Figuerres. “It’s important for them to know what their authority is and how to use it, as well as what their limits are. Their role is to support the learning environment by minimizing distractions so that teachers can focus on teaching and students on learning.”
