The Pajaro Valley Unified School District Board of Trustees is compelled to refute inaccurate statements made by individuals regarding specific district employees. We are making these statements as a unanimous board.
There was never any discussion by the Board to fire our Superintendent, Dr. Mary Anne Mays, or Classified Personnel Director Kathryn Benson. Any suggestions or reports to the contrary are completely false. There was never any wrongdoing on the part of either Dr. Mays or Ms. Benson. Last year our legal counsel was requested to do an objective inquiry into an alleged incident several years ago. It was determined that allegations of wrongdoing were unfounded and were based on a misunderstanding of procedure. All district employees were completely exonerated. The superintendent has one boss, the board of trustees. No individual trustee has authority over the superintendent, and in the absence of specific authority, no individual trustee speaks for the board. Both Dr. Mays and Ms. Benson are highly valued employees of the PVUSD.
We would also like to state that we have the utmost respect for Mr. Terry McHenry and his ability to manage the finances of the PVUSD. Any insinuation that he has performed his duties unethically or received multiple salaries is false. The board approved a stipend for additional work he performs outside his normal duties. These duties eliminated a staff position, which has saved the district several hundred thousand dollars over the years. The PVUSD is audited annually by an independent agency, and the County Office of Education must approve our budget, and no improprieties have occurred. Our books have been, and continue to be open to the public for review at any time.
Pajaro Valley Unified School District Board of Trustees singed and approved this letter at its Board meeting of May 24, 2006.
