At the December 6, 2006, Pajaro Valley Unified School District will be welcoming three new Board members: Libby Wilson, serving Area I; Leslie L. De Rose, serving Area V; and Kim Turley, serving Area VII. They are bringing to the Board great diversity and a common priority goal of hiring a new superintendent who can lead the district in raising student achievement. Following is some information that will allow the community of this district to become more familiar with each of them. PVUSD is looking forward to sharing with them the beauty and challenges of this district and of working together towards academic success for each one of our students.
Libby Wilson is a self-employed representative in the hardware industry. She has a BA in Child Development and worked in a full inclusion preschool as an Assistant Director from 1981 to 1983. Her involvement with education goes back over thirteen years as Vice President of the Aptos High Booster Club, as a member of the Valencia Home & School Club, and as an Aptos Schools Booth Coordinator for the Mote Foundation. One of Wilson’s children is a graduate of Aptos High and currently attends Cal Poly; two others are currently enrolled at Aptos High and Aptos Jr. High. Raising student achievement for all students is her main goal as a trustee. She believes working together with all stakeholders and supporting staff is essential in achieving academic goals. Wilson notes that her biggest concern is that the Program Improvement status of a few of the schools at PVUSD is driving academic focus; the district needs to work towards increased student achievement for every student so that they can succeed academically and have a broader range of opportunities in their future. Working together with stakeholders to implement appropriate change could address this issue. Her best advice for all students is to, “work hard – education is a gift and you should embrace it!”
Having two children attending PVUSD triggered Leslie De Rose’s desire to become more involved in the district. She has been an active participant in the district as a classroom volunteer for eleven years, including field trip chaperone and offering classroom support. De Rose is currently the Manager of Media Services for the Aptos Chamber of Commerce, and has done so for the past 8 1/2 years. This job has allowed her to know her community and develop relationships with local service clubs, city and county officials. English Language Learners are her biggest concern as a Board member; she has learned that if students become fluent in language arts, their performance in other test subjects increases measurably. She believes that setting challenging goals for students and supplying them with the necessary tools to reach those goals is essential for their success. The following is a wise advice she has for all learners of this district: “Don’t take for granted the education that is being offered to you. Use it to your advantage. The entire staff chose to be here only because they want to see you succeed.”
Kim Turley is quite familiar with PVUSD and her love for education defined her first career and her desire to continue to participate in it as a Board member. She was born and raised in this community, attended PVUSD schools, Cabrillo College, and ultimately obtained her BS and teaching credential in Physical Education from California State Hayward. She taught at PVUSD for fifteen years before venturing into her own business in real estate. She has three nieces and nephews in this district and to them, along with all students, Turley offers the following piece of advice, “Reach for the stars, work hard, and most importantly, believe in yourself!”
