The ability to learn at school is directly related to the status of a student's health.  At the Pajaro Valley Unified School District (PVUSD) school nurses play a vital role in the team of professionals who support  student learning.  PVUSD school nurses assist in the modification or elimination of health related barriers to learning.  The role of school nurses also includes many social services functions and health services to district employees as well.

Today students are attending school with major health problems related to complex medical conditions.  Nurses are often the only primary care providers that children see on a regular basis.  School nurses screen and monitor students for a wide range of medical and dental problems.  They teach and supervise the administration of medication and specialized physical health care services such as tube feeding and urinary catheterization.  They provide counseling and education on health related issues.  Nurses also provide skilled nursing treatment plans for students with conditions such as diabetes, seizures, and chronic and severe asthma.  They may refer students to community agencies for problems related to complex medical conditions such as depression, substance abuse, stress, and poverty.  Another key role that nurses play is in the detection and care of physically and/or sexually abused students.
