Linscott Elementary School was established as a cooperation parent-participant magnet school in 1986. In 1993 a group of teachers, parents, community members and students applied for and was granted charter status by the State of California. In the Fall of 1994 Linscott Charter School began as a kindergarten through fifth grade school with 130 students. Today Linscott Charter School serves over 200 students in grades kindergarten through eight.
For many years researchers have been demonstrating the importance of developmentally-based, experiential learning for education that produces well-rounded, capable, critically thinking citizens who become life-long learners. Our program reflects the State and District frameworks and draws on both classical educational theory and current research.
Our goal is to develop in students a sense of responsibility, initiative, autonomy, self motivation and cooperation as they work and play in the classroom. To encourage these qualities the environment is set up to provide children opportunities to make choices, to initiate and carry out their own projects, and to take part in decision-making.
John William Linscott was born in Lincoln County, Maine, in 1848, and arrived in the Pajaro Valley in 1869, after several years of teaching near his home. He continued teaching in the Pajaro Valley and was elected principal of the Watsonville city schools in 1872. Mr. Linscott was elected county superintendent in 1884, but continued to serve in both the local and county posts until 1890. In 1904, Mr. Linscott was named superintendent of the Santa Cruz city schools and principal of the high school there. He served in that capacity until he retired in 1922.
