Underwater Robotics Club Opportunity!

MATE, Marine Advanced Technology Education, is a non-profit educational organization located on the campus of Monterey Peninsula Community College (MPC). MATE sponsors the annual ROV underwater robotics competition. (ROV stands for Remote-Operated Vehicle–an underwater robot!)

Since the first ROV competition in 2002, it has grown to 18 regional competitions across the U.S. as well as Canada, with more under development. This year’s Monterey Regional ROV Competition will be held on Saturday April 24, 2010 at MPC. Learn more about the ROV comptetitions at www.marinetech.org/rov_competition, including a list of regional competitions and information about next April’s Monterey regional competition.

MATE has just received a 3-year, multi-million dollar grant to extend their educational efforts into middle school and possibly upper elementary. (They define “middle school” as grades 5–8.) And they are looking for teachers who want to get on board! The grant is to train, equip and support teachers to start underwater robotics clubs at their schools and coach their students to build ROVs to enter into the annual regional competition.

PVUSD GATE Services and Extended Learning are working with MATE to recruit PVUSD teachers to take advantage of this great opportunity, and to start ROV clubs at our middle or elementary schools. If you are interested in starting an ROV Club at your school, please contact one of these MATE or PVUSD contacts:
