Integrated Thematic Units
Based on Houghton Mifflin Reading Themes
Grades 4 – 6
Developed by classroom teachers in PVUSD,
under the auspices of the PVUSD GATE Services Office
The files below include the entire ITU Unit Plan (9 pages each), including a “tic-tac-toe”
Extenison Menu and matching assessments for the Extension Menu activities. They also include a
“Thematic Matrix” for the unit, and the student “Target Page.”
There are several supporting documents available:
- There are several Student Management Pages,
including an independent work agreement, several
versions of work logs, and a self-evaluation checklist.

The ITUs and supporting documnets are available in three file formats:
- Print-ready .pdf files, which require Adobe Acrobat Reader software;
- Editable .doc files, for use with Microsft Word® (Mac or Windows); and
- Editable .rtf files, which can be opened in any word processing software, Mac or Windows.
Teachers are granted permission to use these ITUs for their own classroom use, including editing and changing them. We ask that you retain the
“PVUSD GATE” in the footer of each page, or provide similar attribution to their original authorship and source. Likewise, if you
choose to re-post them on another website, please include a similar statement of original authorship and a link back to this page. Reprinting
or publishing in any manner for commercial purposes is strictly forbidden without prior written permission from the PVUSD GATE Services Office.
