Planning for Prompt Selection 06-07

Approved Grade Level Genres for District Writing Assessment

The district expects that all genres included in every grade’s standards will be taught. Of those genres, the district designates two to assess each year. (See below).  Writing prompts for those assessments should be chosen from appropriate curriculum materials according to students’ instructional levels. The opportunity to assess should occur at two separate times of the year, mid year and end of year.  It is suggested that prompts be chosen that can be administered in a short time period, and with consideration to articulation through the grades. For example for the district writing assessment, the same prompt should not be used in successive administrations.

In our district, various materials are used to teach writing depending on student need and school programs. In 2005-06 district writing committee representatives prepared a list of suggested prompts for the most commonly used materials. (See next page). If schools determine by grade level that another prompt will be used, the prompt should be embedded in materials that teachers use instructionally and that are based on state standards. This ensures that students are familiar with the genre to be assessed having had prior practice with the genre.  Support cues normally associated with students’ independent writing in this genre should be available during the administration of their district writing assessment.
